Cutting

You’ve made your choice, you have the right tools and you’ve made sure your workspace is safe. You’re ready to start cutting! Now to the delicate task…

Here are some tricks to help you achieve precise and quality results:

  • It is recommended that mouldings, baseboards, and cymas remain at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours before installation.
  • Make sure you measure carefully. Approximates must never be used for cutting.
  • Provide for supports that have the same height as your saw in order to keep long mouldings, cymas, or baseboards, in place.
  • Avoid dust by placing your miter saw in a well-ventilated area.
  • Favour a good quality finish blade. The more teeth your blade has, the cleaner your cut will be (40 teeth or, even better, 80).
  • It is recommended to plan for a loss of about 10% (between 12 to 24 inches per wall) when taking measurements. These losses are due to miter cuts.
  • Don’t forget to subtract the length of walls that will not require moulding, baseboard, or cyma (e.g., due to furniture or electric baseboard heating leaning against it).
  • Favour longer mouldings over shorter ones, even if it may result in waste. This will reduce the number of splice and will look more aesthetic.
  • Transfer angles to your saw with the help of a bevel square.
  • For a clean cut, place your baseboard upside down on the base of the saw. This will avoid wood splints.
  • Make sure the splice of both piece is not joined end to end; the joint will become visible. Instead, cut both pieces at a 45-degree angle. This will ensure your joints are not visible at the finishing stage.
